How Many Americans Work From Home?

According to Telework Research Network, as of 2010, roughly 2.8 million employees (or just over 2% of the U.S. workforce) telecommute a majority of the time. This figure does not include self-employed workers or unpaid volunteers.

As of 2011, about 34 million people work from their residence occasionally, reports Forrester Research, a technology and market research company.

Forrester Research also predicts that the number of people who work remotely will nearly double -- to approximately 63 million people -- by the year 2016.

In 2008, WorldatWork, a non-profit research organization, commissioned a random telephone survey of 1,002 people which indicated a "shift away" from nearly full-time telework to occasional telecommuting. The survey revealed an increase in employees who work remotely at least once a month and noted a slight decrease in those who work remotely almost every day.

Homes constitute a majority of remote-work locations (87%) over a customer's place of business (41%) and car (37%), according to WorldatWork.
