Marina, CA: Affordable Housing On The Way? Cypress Knolls Senior Living Reactivated: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California
The on-again, off-again Cypress Knolls project on the old Fort Ord site appears to be on again, and until a developer is chosen it's unknown how many of the units in the senior community will be affordable housing units. There's a dearth of affordable housing units on the Monterey Peninsula and recent studies have shown that Monterey County is one of the most expensive counties in the State of California for seniors to live. The Marina City Council by a close 3:2 vote on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to seek developers to build a continuum-of-care community. However, the City Council remains deeply divided and it would not be surprising if the project blew up again. Mayor Bruce Delgado is proposing a compressed timeline whereby a project could be under contract by mid-2012, but council members Nancy Amadeo and Jim Ford opposed. Amadeo questioned whether the timeline constituted an illegal order by council members to city staff members outside council deliberations. Ford intimated the timeline was designed to produce only one proposal from developers backed by Delgado. This project has been in limbo for years following allegations one of the developers tried to bribe a city council member to favor its bid. It has already been reduced from 772 homes to about 400 due to the weak economy. In the meantime, the fenced off property has 260 former Army duplexes on it which are dilapidated and getting worse all of the time. It's a shame that some sort of agreement can't be reached quickly so we can move ahead and get some much needed affordable housing built for seniors on the Peninsula.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
