How to Modify a Hardship Letter

    • 1). Contact the mortgage lender to obtain the loss-mitigation department address. The loss-mitigation department is the only department in the mortgage lender company that deals with mortgage modifications. When you contact your lender, you typically speak with a customer service representative, but this is not the same department, so be sure to obtain the exact mailing address for the loss-mitigation department.

    • 2). Type or change the date on the letter.

    • 3). Address the letter to the loss-mitigation department. Change or add the mailing address to the loss mitigation department address for your mortgage company.

    • 4). Change the salutation. If you have the name of a representative in the loss-mitigation department, address the letter directly to the person with which you have been speaking. If not, you can use the general salutation, such "To whom it may concern."

    • 5). Adjust the opening paragraph. The opening paragraph describes why you are writing the letter, which is to request a loan modification, and to explain what your personal situation is that has caused you to have a financial hardship and prevent you from paying your current mortgage. Describe the reason for your hardships such as a divorce, loss of a job, death of the primary income earner, a drastic rate increase on an adjustable rate mortgage or major illness.

    • 6). Modify the second paragraph, which describes what the lender can do to help rectify the situation. You can request that the lender change the interest rate, lower the balance on your mortgage and change the monthly mortgage payment, so that it puts you in a situation where you are able to make your monthly mortgage payments once again.

    • 7). List any steps you have taken to try to rectify the problem on your own. Include the names of the representatives you have spoken with at the mortgage company, conversations with your real estate attorney, accountant or any other individuals that pertain to your specific hardship. For example, if a job loss is your financial hardship, you may describe how long you have been searching for a new position, how many resumes you have submitted, interviews you have been on and the names of the companies and positions where you have applied.

    • 8). Customize your contact information. Include your personal contact information such as your full address, phone number and email address, so the loss mitigation department representative can contact you in response to your loan modification request.

    • 9). Sign the letter.
