    • 2). Search the group's website to find out how to become active. Look up a location for the local branch of the group. Travel to the local branch, either to an office or an organized meeting.

    • 3). Ask if you can sign a petition for immigrants. In some cases, you may click a button on the group's website to participate in an online petition.

    • 1). Write a clear mission statement. The statement should be a paragraph long and clearly state the intention of the petition.

    • 2). Use the Internet to research a local, state or federal representative who has a history of working for immigration reform. This representative will have ties with local immigration reform groups. Call the office of the representative to collect information about local immigration reform groups.

    • 3). Contact the group of like-minded people. State your intent to start a petition and gain the group's help in obtaining its membership's signatures.

    • 4). Start an online petition. There are third-party websites that provide the service free of charge. Direct Facebook friends, Twitter followers, friends, family and strangers to the online petition.

    • 5). Stand in a public place and ask for signatures on your petition. Approach people at a supermarket parking lot, sporting event, university or public park and politely tell them the intent of the petition and ask them if they'd like to sign. Mail copies of the petition to state and local lawmakers.
