The New Highlander: Toyota's Hybrid SUV on the Rise

101 21
Most consumers have held off from buying SUVs because of their fuel consumption, which is higher than that of sedans and hatchbacks because of its bigger engine and heavier, less aerodynamic bulk. The introduction of Toyota's hybrid SUV is going to change all that. The all-new seven-seater Highlander Hybrid features the latest in Toyota's hybrid technology, offering the best in fuel efficiency with a bigger seating capacity, all-wheel drive, versatility, and of course, greater power.

Engine Specs
The Highlander Hybrid midsize SUV is on its second generation release and is unrivalled in its fuel economy, safety, and comfort. Its advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive system is made up of a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with a high-torque electric drive motor-generator, producing 280 net horsepower. It uses a two-speed continuously variable transmission with overdrive and achieves a fuel economy rating of 28 mpg in both city and highway driving. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds.

Trim Levels
The second generation Highlander Hybrid is available in two trim levels: a base model and a limited trim model. The base model's key features are keyless entry, air conditioning with rear controls, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, sliding and split second-row seats with a removable center section, a 50/50 split-folding rear seat, satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and audio streaming, a rearview camera, a navigation system, a touchscreen display with Entune integration, a USB port, and a six-speaker audio system. The Limited trim has all these as well, but adds 19-inch wheels, a Smart Key System with push-button start, leather upholstery, a power liftgate, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, a sunroof, and an upgraded audio system. Owners of the Toyota hybrid SUV may also choose to add a rear seat entertainment system.

The styling of the Highlander Hybrid is very similar to the gas-only Highlander variant, but what sets it apart are its unique front grille and bumper and blue accent headlights, taillights, and badging.

Standard Safety Features
The Highlander Hybrid is equipped with electronic vehicle stability and traction control systems, anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, a rearview camera monitor, a driver knee airbag, front side-impact airbags, overhead curtain airbags for all rows, and active anti-whiplash front head restraints.

Hybrid Highlander reviews
U.S. News lists the Highlander hybrid as number 4 out of 21 affordable midsize SUVs, and is also the 2013 Best Hybrid SUV for Families because of its quality, size, and family-friendly features. Reviewers who have handled the model say that the Toyota hybrid SUV is very much like its non-hybrid variant, with easy-to-use controls and interiors made of good quality materials. Kelley Blue Book sees the Highlander hybrid as a car that attains best-in-class fuel economy without sacrificing interior space or power. Edmunds, another automotive authority, also has a positive review for the model, saying that the Highlander Hybrid's interior is flexible and comfortable. Furthermore, the model is well-rounded and well thought-out family car.

The Highlander Hybrid is the best alternative to other fuel-guzzling sport utility vehicles. If fuel economy is your primary concern and you need space and versatility in a car, this Toyota hybrid SUV is perfect for your needs.
