    • 1). Create a worm farm by drilling a set of air holes with a 1/2 drill bit around the lip of a new 10 gallon plastic storage bin. Drill a second set of holes in the bottom of the bin for drainage holes. Each of the holes on the bottom of the bin should be about 2 inches apart in staggered rows that are 2 inches apart.

    • 2). Place the lid of the container on the floor to act as a drip tray for your worm bin.

    • 3). Saw the PVC pipe into four 4-inch lengths with the jigsaw.

    • 4). Stand each PVC pipe piece on its end on the plastic tub lid. Space the pipe pieces apart so that each one is on a corner of the lid.

    • 5). Place the container on top of the PVC rings.

    • 6). Fill the container 18 inches deep with black and white shredded newspaper. Do not use slick circulars. These contain chemicals that are harmful to worms. Wet the newspaper so that it is as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

    • 7). Drill a second set of holes into a second PVC container. The holes in the second container should be identical to the first container. Drill a set of air holes into the lid of this container that are 2 inches apart in staggered rows that are 2 inches apart.

    • 8). Set the second container aside, but place the lid on the first container.

    • 9). Place red wriggler worms in the container filled with wet newspaper. Typically 1 pound of worms will consume 1/2 pound of food scraps daily. Use only enough worms to consume the amount of food scraps that you produce in a day.

Bury your food scraps in a different location daily. When the bedding and compost have been turned into loam, fill the second container with 18 inches of damp, shredded newspaper. Place the container onto the loam and cover it with the lid. The worms will migrate into the second bin. Once they have finished moving into the second bin, you can remove the first bin from the drip tray and recycle the loam into your garden.

Check the bin daily to ensure that there is adequate circulation, food and moisture levels in the bin. Bins that do not receive adequate temperature, circulation or moisture levels will begin to stink. Worms will leave bins where they do not receive enough food.
