Why You Should Start A Backyard Vegetable Patch

103 2
Here are the main reasons why I think more people should start their own backyard vegetable patch..
1.
You can't get any better than Home-Grown veggies.
When you go to your local grocery store or supermarket to buy vegetables, do you ever consider the fact that maybe your paying top dollar for "supposedly" fresh produce that isn't really even fresh? Think about this for a minute...
How long do you think it takes before these so called "fresh vegetables" hit the shelves in your local store? That's right...
most likely weeks, if not months, depending on where the produce is coming from.
With more and more vegetables being imported from overseas, how long do you think it would take to get them from the paddock to your local supermarket? Most vegetables you buy in store are sprayed with chemicals to help keep them fresh.
When you grow your own vegetables you know exactly where they come from and whats gone into growing them.
You know that when you pick produce from your backyard vegetable patch that what your eating is as fresh as fresh can get.
2 Reducing your carbon footprint.
When you take time to consider the amount of energy it must take to grow, harvest and transport farmed produce, imagine the amount of emissions that would be cut out if more people started to grow their own vegetables.
3.
Kids Love Getting Involved in the backyard vegetable patch
If you have kids, you'll know just how hard it is to keep them occupied.
Starting a backyard vegetable patch is something your young ones will love.
Kids love getting out of the house and into the veggie patch to help out.
Well, I know my 18 month old daughter loves getting out into our veggie patch every afternoon so she can run amuck.
A great way to get kids involved in growing vegetables is to give them their own plot to plant out and look after, this way they also get a sense of achievement when it comes time to harvest, and this will keep them interested.
There are so many other benefits of growing your own vegetables, the ones I have listed above are only a small few.
If you are interested in starting your own backyard vegetable patch there are heaps of resources out there to get you on your way, even if you're a complete beginner.
So don't be afraid to start growing your own vegetables today!
