Recession Forces Ingenuity

I have been utterly amazed by the ingenuity of people because of the recession.
People are very resilient and can come up with creative ways to earn money in order to survive.
Competing in an employment market saturated with unemployed individuals is making people reflect on all the possibilities to become inventive entrepreneurs by honing their talents and expertise or finding an unfilled niche in the market.
With the national unemployment rate at 9.
6%, people need to be resourceful.
Finding a job is tough.
The opportunities out there are slim pickings even for those with the best education and qualifications.
It is quite natural for people to be creative in a recession, especially if you live in an urban community.
The opportunities appear to be endless and may not require much capital investments to get started.
There have been a couple of services that have sparked my interests because they are basic services I would have never considered; and they meet a need.
Here are a few that I have come across.
Trash Handling Services My neighbor two houses away from me sent out a flyer last year to the residents in the neighborhood offering his services to bring their trash and recycling containers to the curb, clean them out, and return them on trash pick day for $15 a month.
At first, I thought it was a corny idea, but I realized what a great service it was for working individuals, seniors, or single females.
To my surprise, he had many of our neighbors partaking in his services because his services had time-added-value.
For a very reasonable price, a person or family could be relieved of the curbside trash responsibility that most often forget.
This corny idea became a brilliant one on my list because he still maintains this business and gets his referrals through word of mouth from the neighbors.
Lawn Watering The same neighbor expanded his services to include lawn watering.
Many in our neighborhood don't have automatic sprinklers.
Those who do may not have sprinklers in places where their landscape needs watering.
He has been watering the grass of our neighbors who work long hours or just don't have time because of various responsibilities.
His services help keep the neighborhood well maintained and he is earning an honest living.
This service costs $15 a month too.
To-Do List Services A to-do list service is one I came across that I thought was absurd, but changed my mind after much contemplation.
What a magnificent idea to help people outsource specific tasks or responsibilities that would end up discarded, pushed to the back burner, or forgotten! Think about it.
How many of us maintain a to-do list whether it's a to-do list of yours or a honey-do list for your spouse? How many of us wish we could have a little help with completing items on our to-do list so we can have more time or relinquish obligating burdens that we don't like? Let me tell you - there is really a market for outsourcing to-do tasks.
I have seen nominal fees ranging from $10 - $75 depending on the task and frequency.
You can't under estimate the creativity of the brain when it is under self-preservation pressure.
From what I have learned over the years, we only use 10% of it.
Why are people using their creative brain power to come up with innovative ways to earn a living? The answer is pure survival.
If you have the ingenuity to create a unique business or have the passion and drive to step out on an idea to test the waters, you can survive this recession.
