Installing Shutters on Large Windows
Shutters Installation Guide Having large windows in your house may sometimes be a problem if you want to have a certain amount of privacy.
However, this problem can be fixed by installing shutters on large windows.
Covering large windows with shutters can be a solution to your problems.
You can buy the custom made shutters which will fit your windows perfectly, but have in mind that you would need to spend more money on that type of shutters.
Once you get them, you will have to follow these steps in order to install wood shutters on your large windows.
For this job you are going to need the package that comes with the shutters including hinges, filler strips, screws...
You will also need a drill and bits, measuring tape, safety goggles, pencil, 2 screwdrivers (flat head and regular) and a hammer.
When you have all the tools, you can start with your job.
I already mentioned some of the steps, but let's start from the beginning.
First of all you will need to measure the windows you plan to cover with shutters.
Tell the manufacturer where you plan to put the shutters (inside or outside mount) and make the order.
If the shutters come disassembled, follow the instructions to assemble them and make sure you get the warranty.
Also match the color of your shutters with the rest of the room.
If you decide to paint the shutters before you mount them, first paint the exterior and then interior panels.
This will reduce the amount of visible drips on the exterior panel.
Now the real work with fitting the shutters can begin.
You should assemble the frame of the shutters and secure it onto the window casement using screws.
Screw the frame at several places just to hold the frame, and once you check that the frame is positioned correctly, screw the rest of the holes.
Once you put the hinge pins on the shutter panels, use each of the panels to mark the place where the hinge screws need to be placed.
When you have finished with this, remove the shutter panels from the hinges after you release the hinge pins, and then screw the hinges into the frame of the shutters.
Slide the panels into the hinges and make sure they are secured with hinge pins.
Now try to open and close the shutters covering your large window.
Make sure that everything is working properly and that there are no gaps.
If the shutters are somehow separated by a gap one form the other, use shims to correct this.
Once you check that the shutters are in the right place, screw the rest of the holes and then check again if the shutters are working properly.
Place magnetic catches on the windowsill, which will be used for shutters closing and that's it.
You have successfully installed shutters on your large window.
