Human Food

• The aroma of human food draws bears to any location. Bears are especially attracted to meat, fish and strong smelling foods. When camping out, it is important not to sleep where cooking has been done and to store food in bear-resistant containers. This is essential to prevent dangerous encounters with bears.
  
  

Pets and Pet Food

• The aroma of pets such as dogs, rabbits and chickens also draws bears. Pets should not be left unattended as they can easily be attacked by bears. Pet food such as dog food, cat food and birdseed also attracts bears. Do not leave uneaten pet food exposed, but store it in bear-resistant containers.
  
  

Garbage

• Bears love the strong smell of garbage, and it is often a source of excellent nutrition for them. Camps should be kept clean and garbage free. Place garbage in bear-resistant containers, a bear-proof dumpster or a locked building to keep out bears. They have been known to enter cars and cabins through open doors and windows to get to food.
