How to Test a Cat for a UTI

104 19
    • 1). Purchase nonabsorbent litter from a local vet or pet store. Purchase pH strips at a local medical supply store.

    • 2). Place nonabsorbent litter in the cat's box, and then put the litter box somewhere nearby so you'll know when the cat uses it.

    • 3). Wait for the cat to go to the bathroom naturally, as fresh urine should be used because older urine can result in a high pH or false-positive reading.

    • 4). Dip a pH stick into the fresh urine, and shake off the excess. Follow the instructions included with the pH sticks on the time needed for the color to change. Match the color on the stick with the color chart provided with the pH sticks. A normal pH reading is between 6.4 and 6.6.

    • 5). Call your vet if the pH reading is high or low, and schedule an appointment.
