Who Says You Can"t Be a Cowboy Or Cowgirl - Horseman Or Horsewoman

103 3
Mental attitude has a lot do with the way a man or woman handles horses.
I believe this is what determines whether you are a horseman or horsewoman, cowboy or cowgirl.
You can either get along with a horse or fight with him.
But if your desire is to get the best out of your horse then you will go a long with your horsemanship.
Have you ever watched a top hand around horses? He or she keeps his or her movements very casual don't they? They never raise their voice or lose their temper.
No real cowboy or cowgirl would ever strike their horse out of anger.
Though correction; sometimes physical is a must.
A horse takes its cues from the attitude and body language of its rider.
And this is no less true when man is on the ground.
Man can learn just as much for the horse as the horse can learn from man.
Handling horses is much likened to the handling of children in many respects.
A cowboy or cowgirl talks to his/her horse, through the reins, hands, and body language.
To be a horseman or woman it takes time & patience.
You must study your horse & other horses, behaviors and habits, whether in the stall, riding arena, pasture, or out on the trail.
Study Study Study, this is the key.
One of my most favorite things to do is study other horsemen & horsewomen & also the so called horsemen & horsewomen (the ones that have no clue to horsemanship at all, but have owned horse for 30 or 40 yrs).
Give it some time and you will be able distinguish real cowboy & cowgirls from the one with all the fancy horses and equipment but no knowledge at all.
And don't let anybody tell you, you have to be from the country or live on a ranch in Texas to be a proficient horseman or horse woman.
Take it from me I grew up a city boy turned cowboy & horseman and gained the knowledge of horsemanship in a pretty short period of time.
I have just as much knowledge if not more than most people that have grown up with horses all of their lives.
Because I study, read books, watch videos, go to rodeos & events to observe the horsemanship; I work with my own horse and others, and let me not forget that I had a good teacher & mentor.
So be encouraged to purse your dream of being a horseman or woman.
