How to Maintain Ties to Your Cultural Heritage
- 1). Maintain contact with family members or friends who still live in your old country, if you are an immigrant. Keep in touch with members of your own tribe or cultural group if you have always lived in the United States.
- 2). Learn about the religious beliefs, traditions, food and festivals associated with your culture. View this as a particularly important project. Some people find that learning about their cultural heritage adds an extra dimension to their lives.
- 3). Teach other people about your cultural heritage. You will feel increased pride in your heritage by passing it on to others, and you will also help others to learn and appreciate your culture. This can help further understanding and relationships between cultural groups. Offer to talk to local school children about your heritage, or even to teach them how to cook significant dishes or sing traditional songs.
- 4). Pass your heritage on to the younger generations of your own family, too. You are their vital link to their own past.
- 5). Contribute to the work of relevant community groups, by taking part in traditional festivals, fundraising, or working with vulnerable members of your cultural or ethnic group.
