How to Request a Forwarding Mail Address
- 1). Submit an online request to forward your mail. To start, visit the Mover's Guide portion of the USPS Website. Note that during this process, the USPS charges a $1 fee to your credit or debit card in order to verify your identity. Read the Privacy Act Statement and click that you acknowledge and understand the statement to begin.
- 2). Choose whether your move is temporary (if you plan to return to your current address within 12 months), or permanent. Then, select the date you want the mail forwarding to begin.
- 3). Select the type of move that applies to your situation. The options are "Individual", "Family", or "Business." If you are the only resident relocating, select "Individual." If your entire family is relocating and has the same last name, select "Family." (Please note: If your family members have different last names, you will need to complete a request for each surname.) If your business is relocating, select "Business."
- 4). Enter your name (or the head of household's name if a family move). Then, enter your OLD address and your NEW address. You can then enter your e-mail address where the USPS can send a confirmation.
- 5). Verify your identity by entering the information on your credit or debit card. The billing information must match your name, or in the event of a family move, the name of the head of household. At this point, the $1 charge will process. To avoid this fee, submit your forwarding request in person at your local post office.
- 6). Review all the information entered and click "Submit," if correct. If anything is not correct, you have the option to edit accordingly before submitting.
