You Know the Outcome If You Write the Script

What does the future hold in store for you and your family? As we face what the pundits are calling a global economic meltdown, many people are worried about their futures. They're worried about their jobs and about their ability to create an income. They're worried about the wealth that they've accumulated and their ability to retain that wealth. They're worried about their general financial well-being because if their wealth dissolves in an economic firestorm, what will the future hold?

That of course is a rhetorical question. Nobody knows what the future holds and even if they did they couldn't change it. However you can affect to a large extent what happens to you and to your family regardless of external events. The key is to plan for the future, and to understand the risks that you face and the potential pitfalls that you might encounter. You should consider your planning process within the context of creating a formal document. What you essentially want to do is to write a script for your future.

Of course there are no guarantees that your script will come true. However once you have a script in place--a financial plan--you've begun the process of taking control over your future financial security and your family's well-being. By creating your financial plan, you're essentially defining your expected outcome for the future, and the more detailed your plan is in terms of evaluating potential pitfalls and risks, the more likely it is that you will be able to implement it successfully.

This all of course assumes that you know what outcome you want from your future. Many people don't understand money. They learn about money and finances from family, friends, business associates and other people that they know who may or might not be all that successful with money themselves. Many mortgage brokers will tell you how amazing are the number of people that they see in their office who can't balance a checkbook and who don't really understand how credit cards work. If you find yourself in this situation, you should take immediate steps to rectify it. You cannot write an effective script for your financial future if you don't understand what the future should be.

The important lesson here is that facing a global economic recession does not necessarily mean that you are going to go broke or that your family is going to suffer. It does however pose a potential threat along those lines for that to happen. The only way to know the outcome of your future is to plan for it successfully, and provided that you have a fundamental understanding of finance and money, this is something you should do immediately.
