File Types

• Windows uses the file extension to associate particular file types with applications capable of opening that type of file. Well known file extensions like EXE and JPG have one clear file type. However, there is no central authority imposing uniqueness on the use of file extensions and so different software produces can use the same file extension for unrelated file types. The two file types using the ITS file extension are dissimilar and the presence of both on the same computer would cause confusion with the file association mechanism.
  
  

Internet Document Set

• The most widely used implementation of the ITS file extension is for the Internet Document Set. This is a settings file listing preferences and capabilities for Internet Explorer and similar Web browsers. The file is written when the user sets the File Type options, available under the View/Options/File Types menu path in the browser. This lists the file types that can be opened with Internet Explorer. This is a similar functionality to that of the Default Programs settings in Windows.
  
  

Impulse Tracker Sample

• Impulse Tracker is a freeware music sampling program written for the DOS platform. The program has not been updated since 1999 and is not compatible with Windows systems. In order to run the program on modern Windows-based computers, the user has to also install an DOS emulator. This provides a DOS environment within Windows enabling the program to be run. For this reason, the number of installations of the system has dropped progressively over the years, as Windows advanced and graphics-capable rival trackers became widely available. The samples produced by the program are called Impulse Tracker Samples and are saved in files with the ITS file extension.
  
  

Compatibility

• As Internet Document Set files are text-based and Impulse Tracker Sample ITS files are audio, the two formats are not compatible. It is impossible to open an Impulse Tracker ITS file in Internet Explorer, and similarly impossible to open an Internet Document Set ITS file in Impulse Tracker.
