- 1). Schedule a time to speak with her dad. Rather than just showing up and asking for a private audience, call ahead and ask your future father-in-law when the two of you can get together for a chat. It's possible her dad may have an idea what you want to meet with him about, especially if the two of you have never spent significant time alone.
- 2). Dress appropriately for the meeting. While you don't have to show up in a business suit, ensure that you're clean, tidy and dressed in something comparable to business casual. Showing up in jeans with holes, a stained T-shirt and grungy tennis shoes is not the best way to present yourself.
- 3). Plan what you want to say. Express your love for your girlfriend to her dad, tell him how highly you value her and explain how you want to spend the rest of your life with her. If anyone already knows how special she is, it's her dad, so he'll most likely understand where you are coming from.
- 4). Show her dad the ring. Having the ring in hand shows how serious your intentions are and that you are willing to invest financially in winning your girlfriend's hand in marriage.
- 5). Ask her dad for his advice on what makes a successful proposal and a solid marriage. He's had a considerable head start on you and can probably offer useful nuggets of advice.
- 6). Thank her dad for his time and for his blessing on your upcoming union. Express your respect for him as a person, and tell him how you look forward to becoming a part of his family. Ask him not to tell his daughter that you've met with him so your proposal will come as a surprise.
