How to Organize Cooking Recipes

    Printed Recipes

    • 1). Make a list of broad categories into which your recipes fall, such as desserts, salads, vegetarian and soups.

    • 2). Separate all existing recipes on index cards into stacks according to category. Separate large piles of cards into subcategories to make finding the recipes easier. For example, the category "desserts" can be divided into the subcategories "cakes", "pies", "cookies" and "candies".

    • 3). Throw out recipes that you have never used or hardly ever use.

    • 4). Transfer recipes from any loose pieces of paper or from torn magazine pages to index cards, so all recipes are uniform in size for easy storage. Either print the recipe on the index card or cut and paste the recipe to the card.

    • 5). Store the index cards in a recipe box of choice, using a tabbed index card as the lead card for each category. Accordion-style files or three-ring binders are other options if you are storing recipe cards in various sizes.

    Internet and Email Recipes

    • 1). Pull up any recipes you may have saved in computer files and discard those recipes that have never been used or probably won't be used.

    • 2). Using a software program, copy and paste an online recipe to a blank document page. Click "File" on the Tool Bar, then click "Save As". At the bottom of the pop-up window that appears, click "New Folder" to create a new recipe category folder and save the document to that folder.

    • 3). Email an online recipe to yourself, indicating the recipe title in the email's subject line. Create an email file for each category, as per your specific email service provider's instructions. Store the recipe to the file.

    • 4). Create separate files for all recipe categories, whether using document filing or email filing system. Once you have created a separate file for each category, simply save each new recipe to the appropriate file. Store new recipes as soon as possible to stay on top of your system.

    • 5). Use the search function or your email account to retrieve the specific recipe you desire.
