What is art education, how and when did it start, were there art schools earlier? If we start reading about these things it is too extensive and would require several days to know in detail about it, but it is said that the earliest recorded data for an art school was in Greece in 400 BC. Art education involves visual arts like drawing, painting, sculpting, art of weaving either baskets or fabrics, jewelery making, pottery, architecture etc. The Greeks are know for the statues of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, and the beautiful temples, they are also know for their pottery with detailed mythological incidents painted on the pots. Even in Rome art developed in the form of sculpting statues of real people like the kings and queens and other people of higher standards. Their art also developed by creating beautiful art pieces of real life incidents or important events like a crowning ceremony or a battle field scene, etc.

In Europe artists had the procedure of taking up apprentices to teach. The apprentice would live with the artist, serve him even in household things like cooking and cleaning, while in return he was getting the art education that he had come for.

Art education is not just limited to colleges or universities. Art education is also provided by many private art studios and art schools. This private art education is given at Melbourne art school where experienced artists teach students the techniques of art. One can learn the techniques that are taught in colleges or one can take up these private classes as a foundation or preparation for art courses in colleges or universities. There will be classes for children as well as teenagers separately in these private art studios. They will also have weekend classes and they conduct workshops too, so that those who have a hectic time can join weekend classes or even attend workshops if they cant attend weekend classes. The teachers who teach there will be artists or very experienced teachers in the field of art who will have extensive knowledge in the field of art. It would be a good place to learn art and students will be given individual attention to improve their skills and clear whatever doubts they have.

Even now one can join as an apprentice and assist an artist in his work and in this way learn all the techniques that the artist knows, one might have to spend a lot of time by learning this way and is only good for those who want to learn a particular style if the artist is famous for that particular style.

Some of the art schools have even started giving online art courses and provide certificates. These kind of courses will take students from all over the world as there is no boundary limitations and online classes will be scheduled and conducted and teacher guidance on a one-on-one basis will also be provided with such courses. Those who cannot go abroad and learn can also opt for these kind of courses, but not all institutes offer these courses. Though one can learn enough techniques through online art schools but it cannot be compared to attending art workshops in person conducted by expert artists.
