Can You Use Chalk Lines on ChoiceDek Composite Decking?

    Composite Decking

    • At its most basic level, composite decking is a synthetic blend of manmade materials that are blended together to create a wood lookalike. It is infused with a variety of plastics and other compounds, and in some cases with actual wood fibers, to create a hybrid composite that contains elements of both the natural world and the synthetic. It is easy to clean, flexible and can last for years beyond natural wood in the elements.

    Chalk Line Uses

    • During deck construction, chalk lines are one of the most common tools used to help speed up the process. From marking a piece of board lengthwise to cut a slightly angled piece to installing deck planking and then snapping a line across the outside edge to cut all of the pieces after they are installed, chalk lines are used to mark the material in numerous situations.

    Quick and Easy Removal

    • Because composite decking is basically a plastic material, the product does not soak up moisture, stain or otherwise change color other than fading over the years due to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. As far as chalk lines go, you can wipe up any excess with a sponge and water or you can just wait for the first rainfall to do the job for you.

    Considerations

    • The only time there could potentially be issues is if you are cutting an exterior board that will have a visible cut edge. If you have used a dark chalk, such as black, there is the potential for that chalk to “burn” into the edge of the cut as the blade of the saw passes through the material and the reference line during the cutting. For best results, use a light-colored chalk to avoid this.
