Understand what a petition is. A petition is a list of names and addresses of people who would like to see changes happen in regards to a particular issue. Most petitions have one or two paragraphs at the top that explain the change(s) that the petition is hoping to bring about. By seeing a long list of names and addresses of people who agree on a particular position, those in power will sometimes reconsider a position.

Read what the petition is trying to accomplish. Do not take another person’s word for what a petition means. Read the language yourself to make sure that you understand what change(s) the petition is hoping to bring about. If you cannot understand what the petition is trying to accomplish by reading the words on the petition, then do not sign it.

Determine if you agree with the position addressed in the petition. Petitions can cover just about any topic, from a topic as controversial as abortion to a desire to have speed bumps installed on a neighborhood street. If you do not agree with the petition, then do not sign the petition.

Decide whether your want to sign the petition. Even if you agree with the position, you might not want to sign it. For example, you might choose not to sign petitions if you do not want a public record of your positions on certain controversial issues. Also, if you are indifferent to particular positions, you might choose not to sign petitions related to those issues.

Sign your name. If you choose to sign a petition, sign your name where indicated. Be sure to write out your name clearly next to your signature in case someone has trouble reading your signed name.

Include your full address. When you sign petitions that will be submitted to Congressmen, it is very important to include your full mailing address. By providing your address, your Congressman will know that you are a constituent who has the power to vote him out of office if he does not heed the petition.
