Fare Sales in Winter

Winter airfare sales tend to be short lived, but don't be discouraged if you miss the deadlines. This time of year, airlines often extend the dates or offer new sales.

The two best periods for finding winter airfare deals are the first two weeks of December and dates from Jan. 10-early February. In between is the holiday season, a time when lots of people travel and discounts are much more elusive.

Watch for opportunities and book them quickly if they fit your budget and your plans.

Delta offers Dubai discounts of up to $300 per booking. Purchase by Feb. 21 for travel until May 15. Use promotional code "DV18944" at time of online checkout.

United has posted discount airfares to top Ski Destination that are subject to availability. Destinations include Denver, Vancouver and Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Icelandair.com offers an Arctic North promotion from $1,234/person for a trip that includes airfare, four hotel nights and several meals. The fare must be booked from Boston, Edmonton, Newark, New York (JFK), Washington DC (IAD), Denver, Seattle or Toronto. Note that sightings of the Northern Lights are a key part of the sales pitch but are not guaranteed on this non-refundable trip. Book for travel from Jan. 6-Apr. 26, and note there are specific travel days for each departure location.

Virgin Atlantic offers cheap London flights during the winter months. The offers vary by the period of travel.
