The Ford Explorer: The Gold Standard in Family SUVs

The Ford Explorer continues to lead the way from dealerships in Brownsville, Texas to Hartford, Connecticut. It's the ultimate family vehicle. These exemplary sports utility vehicles have garnered a reputation as a great family vehicle and, as recently as 2011, one of the latest models was awarded Truck of the Year in North America.

The first Ford Explorers were on the assembly lines as early as 1990. At the time, they were intended to replace Ford's Bronco II. The Explorer played a large part in influencing the development of what would become the ubiquitous sport utility vehicle (SUV). A solid medium-sized family auto with long lasting performance, the Explorer had styling and features at the top of its class. It quickly became the standard to which other dealerships held their family mid-sized SUVs to.

The original Explorer was inspired by Ford's Ranger pickup. Available in four or rear wheel drive, it was designed with "shift-on-the-fly" technology that allowed gear shifting at any speed. The model featured automatic headlights, fog lamps, auto transmission, and a rear view mirror with automatic dimming, an outside thermometer and a center roof console. Though the manufacturer released new models regularly, there weren't significant changes in them until later.

The 2000 Explorer was a best-selling model with a new body style that was offered in XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited trims. The 2002 model saw further refinements such as a more stable stance and independent suspension that improved maneuverability.

The Explorer remains one of the most popular family SUVs in Ford's inventory. Over time, the models got bigger and the chassis were engineered to withstand greater impacts. These newer models eventually offered power-driven foldable third row seats and a system that regulated tire pressure. With roomier seating, Ford was determined to maintain its status as a durable luxury ride for the entire family.

Two decades later, Ford still claims a spot at the top of the SUV list. With a mechanical and visual makeover, the 2012 Explorer is a full-sized FWD crossover that can seat up to seven passengers comfortably. Its terrain management system makes it ideal for driving in all climates and environments, and the navigation system is ready to take the family on long trips.

If you're in the market for a Ford in Brownsville, TX, consider hitting the road in one of the best family vehicles available today. You and your family will love it for years to come.
