Health insurance companies are private businesses that operate for a profit. They must practice risk management to limit their expenses. Offering coverage to many candidates who have histories of medical conditions eventually will bankrupt a carrier. While there are a number of reasons health insurance companies turn down applicants for coverage, it's difficult to buy a policy anywhere once you've been turned down by one company. This reason and others may consider you to be high risk. - Health insurance coverage may be denied due to a preexisting condition, which is an ailment that you had before you applied for coverage. These have proved to be costly in medical care. The list of preexisting conditions is long and varies for different companies. It depends on the type of condition, current symptoms and the length of time since completion of treatment. Some conditions are costly and the insurer cannot afford the risk.
- Health coverage applications must be reviewed for false information. Listing some conditions, while omitting others, is a reason for coverage denial. When an application is taken, the person applying must sign an information release form giving permission to the insurance company to access medical history. The insurance investigation department will view your medical history, checking it against the information listed on the application. Leaving out important information raises red flags, and may constitute immediate denial. The insurance underwriter (person who reviews the application) may require a physical by a doctor of the company's choosing in order to approve coverage.
- During the initial insurance investigation, there may be questions asked pertaining to risk-creative circumstances in your work or play which would place you at high risk for medical coverage. This may include race car driving, use of a motorcycle, skydiving or mountain climbing. Other application questions cover smoking, drinking and use of recreational drugs.
