How to Pick Oysters in Connecticut
- 1). Obtain a fishing license from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. As of 2010, it costs $32.00 to obtain a year-long All Waters Fishing License.
- 2). Go to the shore at low tide. Oysters are often found between the mid-tide to low tide marks.
- 3). Find an ideal oyster picking section. Oysters often congregate in any area with rocks, mud or clusters of broken shells.
- 4). Walk the area, dragging an oyster rake behind you. Check the rake for oysters every 20 feet of walking distance.
- 5). Pick up any oyster shell that meets the legal size. The legal size in many areas is 3 inches in length, but check your local laws to be sure.
- 6). Examine the shell for smaller oysters or rocks. If present, pry the small oysters or rocks away from the shell with a flathead screwdriver. If two oysters of legal size are stuck together, you don't have to pry them apart.
- 7). Place each oyster in a bucket. Continue picking oysters until you reach a desired amount.
- 8). Store the freshly picked oysters in a container in the refrigerator. Cover the container loosely with damp paper towels.
