How to Avoid Having your Invention Ripped Off by a Direct Response Company
- 1). First, make sure you understand who is going to pay for the production of the infomercial. If it is hard to get a direct answer, then it is probably you. A true direct response company will pay for the ad since they have something to gain from selling the product.
- 2). Ask for references. Ask for a successful reference and unsuccessful one and speak with both about their experiences. But don't just rely on this, do some research of your own about whatever company your dealing with.
- 3). Make sure you examine the contract they offer you. You want to protect yourself and your invention as much as possible. Be careful of exclusivity clauses. You may also want to seek the consul of a lawyer.
- 4). Find out if the company is part of the Electronic Retailing Association. You can look them up yourself at: http://www.retailing.org/member_directory. You can also call the ERA and check their membership status and see if there are any complaints against the company.
