What Is the HLC View on Retaining a Hobsonville Point Kindergarten?
Yesterday I met with the Sustainability Manager of the Hobsonville Land Company (HLC), Katja Leitz to discuss our renewed plans to relocate the Hobsonville North Kindy.
The HLC have kept the kindy well informed regarding the deadline for the closure of the kindy (at least in its current location).
They raised the requirement for the kindy to be vacated from its existing site with the AKA some 2.
5yrs ago! If the AKA were truly concerned about the future of this kindy, they would have acted with more urgency and passion 2.
5 years ago and we might not be in the position we are in now.
Katja reiterated that from a development point of view, retaining a kindy in the area would be ideal.
The HLC have continued discussions with the Ministry of Education (MOE) about the possibility of re-establishing the kindy on a public childcare zoned site on the new primary school land.
What this means is that this would be free land! Free land + existing building = an open kindergarten! The HLC have had no definitive answers from the MOE.
What we need is the MOE to show urgency on this and come back with an answer.
Yes or No.
Does anyone have any contacts within the MOE to help speed up this process? John Key...
as our local MP are you reading this? We also discussed the Kohanga Reo and the perception that it was to remain in its present location on Hobsonville Point.
This confusion was caused by the fact that the Kohanga Reo was included on public documentation outlining the various community services that are planned to be available on Hobsonville Point (which also included where the other allocated childcare sites were).
Katja made it clear that the Kohanga Reo was not remaining at this site and it was included in this document because it is currently located there.
Confusing because the same logic wasn't applied to our kindergarten! The Kohanga Reo is in the same position as our kindergarten.
They will need to tender for any space in competition with other organisations.
Katja was keen to clarify the AKAs role vs the parents role in this project.
I explained to Katja that the parents at the kindy were frustrated with the lack of action on the part of the AKA to represent our interests.
We feel we have no choice but to go it alone.
The AKA are more than welcome to jump back onboard and start getting behind our cause, after all, and correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they in the business of providing kindy's for kids? I discussed a few ideas that we currently have for relocation including approaching the Air Force to see whether they would consider continuing with the relationship that has served us well for over 30 years by providing a site for us.
I also mentioned other our avenues such as approaching the City Councils.
Does anyone else have any ideas regarding possible sites? I asked Katja what the HLC might be prepared to do to assist the Kindy in its relocation efforts.
She will get back to me on this.
I would like to think that this project would be one for the developers to get behind as it would ensure a much needed facility remain in the area and enhance the already well established community plans for Hobsonville Point.
