How to Clear Up & Clean a Green Swimming Pool
- 1). Use a durable leaf net to remove debris from the pool bottom. Stir up all debris in order to capture and remove it from the pool.
- 2). Test the water's pH and alkalinity levels. Use a pool water litmus strip test kit, following the kit's instructions. Compare your results to the given chart to determine how much chemicals to add.
- 3). Add pH and alkalinity chemicals to the pool, known as increaser or decreaser. Test the water with a second litmus strip to ensure pH and alkalinity levels are from 7.2 to 7.8 and 80 to 100ppm (parts per million), respectively.
- 4). Shock the pool. Add 3 to 4 gallons of super-chlorinated chemical to the pool water. Continue adding shock each day until the water turn from green to light green, cloudy white or clear.
- 5). Filter the pool for 24 hours a day until the water clears up. Backwash the filter (purge debris) three to four times a day to keep the filter clean. Follow the manufacturer's directions to ensure you do not ruin the pump when backwashing.
- 6). Skim or vacuum remaining debris from the pool once the water clears. Brush the pool side if needed to loosen debris for skimming.
