How to Solve Rust Problems on a Car
- 1). Sand away the rust in the area you are working on.
- 2). Wash the area with soap and water using a sponge. Then, dry the area with a lint-free towel.
- 3). Apply rust converter to the area that had rust on it. The converter will convert any remaining surface rust you might have missed and help prevent new rust from forming.
- 4). Allow the rust converter to dry completely.
- 5). Cover the rust converter with touch-up paint. Alternatively, you may wish to blend in the paint with a spray paint if the area is large. Blending paint is difficult, and it may not look professional, but it will help to prevent the rust from reappearing until you take the car in for a professional paint job. Apply three coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next coat.
- 6). Apply three coats of clear coat spray to the painted area, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next coat.
