How To Care For Koi Carp

102 10
Keeping koi carp is a popular pastime as they are a species that are famous for their graceful movements and vibrant colours. Koi are also a species that have a relatively long life. If cared for correctly a mature individual may live up to thirty years. It is for this reason that they have been kept as decorative pond fish for many centuries.

It was in Japan in the nineteenth century that koi carp were first bred for domestic ponds. Since that time their diversity has increased dramatically. Today they are available in a diverse range of colours including yellow, green, orange, red, blue and silver. It is important to understand that their vibrancy of colour is in part determined by their living environment. If the water in the pond is not clean then you cannot expect the koi to thrive and appear healthy.

Another essential consideration is space. Koi can grow rapidly early in life and can become quite large. They are known to be a very social species and can live happily alongside other fish as long as there is enough room. If the pond becomes overcrowded then the fish will become stressed and can develop various diseases.

Most experts would suggest that to keep koi carp a pond that has a capacity of at least five hundred gallons would be required. It would be better to have a pond that is too large rather than one that is too small. If you are yet to create the actual pond then do not just consider your current requirements, always think about future changes you may want to make. There is nothing more disturbing than seeing your precious fish out grow the space you have provided for them.

It is important to regularly monitor the behaviour of the fish to check for any problems. Koi require water that is of the highest quality. The temperature needs also to be kept fairly constant. They can live comfortably in water that is around sixty to seventy five degrees Fahrenheit, if it becomes too high or too low then you should notice a change in the fish's behaviour. For example they may swim deeper in the summer months. As koi can be expensive to buy it would be a waste of money if you were then not to monitor the water conditions.

It is natural that during the winter months their activity will slow down. If you live in a cold climate the fish may enter a hibernation mode. During this time they will not eat so much food. Make sure the water does not freeze by using a water heater.

How deep is your pond? It is suggested that a minimum depth of at least four feet is preferable for koi carp species, but the deeper the better. If the pond is too shallow then the koi would be at greater risk of being attacked by predators such as racoons, cats, and birds.

Keeping koi carp can be a very pleasurable activity. They can bring a relaxing ambience to your garden space. As long as you understand the basic steps of how to care for their wellbeing you should not be faced with any problems.
