Frost-Free Freezer Maintenance
Defrosting
- Frost-free freezers rarely experience excessive ice buildup, due to the built-in defrost technology, but some ice buildup may occur if large amounts of warm food are deposited in the freezer at one time. Defrost your frost-free freezer when your store of food is low and you have several hours to spend on the project. Remove all the remaining food from the freezer and place it in ice chests or a separate refrigerator unit. Unplug the freezer. Place a bowl or pan of hot water inside the freezer and close the lid or door of the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes to aid in melting any accumulated ice. Use a plastic scraper to help remove any stubborn ice. Remove any water with a towel and wipe up remaining moisture with a dry towel. Plug the freezer back in and allow it to cool down for at least 30 minutes before returning the food to it.
