Is Your Back Stuck, Kinked, Or Have A Crick?

After being in chiropractic practice for over 30 years I've heard patient's describe their lower back pain in many ways.
Some people come in telling me that their back is "stuck" and they can't move in a certain direction.
Others may say that they have a "kink" in their back and they can't straighten up.
Still another may describe having a "crick" causing constant stiffness of the low back.
However it is described I understand what they're feeling and 90 percent of the time chiropractic care can help.
To accurately explain what happens to the lower back it's important to know a bit about the anatomy of the human spine.
The spine consists of 24 movable bones, called vertebrae, assembled one on top of the other.
On both sides of each spinal bone there are joints which make contact with the vertebrae above and below.
These joints should move freely, in a gliding fashion, to allow us to move about normally.
Some anatomist's describe the movement of the spine as being like that of a chain.
As long as the chain moves freely everything is normal.
But we all know that sometimes links in the chain can become stuck or have a kink.
In a sense, this can happen to the bones of our lower back.
When this occurs it can range from being mildly uncomfortable to being excruciating and debilitating.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that nearly 80 percent of Americans adults will experience back pain at some point in their life.
Additionally 30 percent of children ages 8 to 14 note having back pain.
Chiropractic care for lower back pain involves first having a thorough evaluation of the patient which includes a physical and chiropractic structural exam to determine if the joints of the back are moving freely.
If they are not freely moving chiropractors call that area "fixated".
When spinal joints are fixated a Doctor of Chiropractic can correct this by using gentle manual methods to allow the joints to move properly.
A study in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, February 2015 showed that by using a special x-ray process called video fluoroscopy, researchers were able to produce real-time video views that demonstrated the benefits of gentle spinal adjustments performed by chiropractors.
In the research study they identified joint fixations of the spine and then observed the joints behavior after a Chiropractic Doctor adjusted that region of the spine.
The video showed a significant improvement in movement of the treated area, supporting the use of chiropractic therapy to restore joint motion.
So if you have a "crick" or "kink" in your lower back or if it's "stuck" and you feel the need to regain your normal movement and alignment think first about seeing your Doctor of Chiropractic.
