Don’t Just Decorate Your Website – Communicate!

The internet was developed mainly for the benefit of communication. Thanks to the evolution of technology friends can be emailed, online auctions can be visited, and updates on current events from beautifully designed internet domains can be received. Just think about reading the daily news on a laptop with just black text and a white background €" how boring would that be! So it should be no surprise that websites with better aesthetics are preferred by most viewers over, hands down.

With the growing complexity of internet design and the advent of better and more capable web browsers, there is a concerted effort to enrich an internet presence specifically to gain the attention of users. This growing fondness with creating fancier-looking online bases raises a question as to what should have a higher priority, the website's visual design or the actual content.

The goal of any internet presence is to have a visually appealing location for all visitors, adding interest to what might otherwise be the reading of black text against a plain white background. This concept has been misunderstood and it has wound up with a website that looks great €" but doesn't have anything worth reading or revisiting when similar information is desired.

In practical terms, a website's visual aspects does help to capture visitors' interest in the site; however, that will only work that first viewing. With little else to offer to specifically address what the visitor originally searched for will cause that visitor to never return to that particular internet location.

On the other hand, websites with simple, less fancy designs but valuable content to offer may look a little uninteresting at first glance. That outlook will change when a visitor find just what was searched for because it contain a goldmine of information that's worth reading and revisiting.

As an example, look at blog sites especially those that use Word Press which can sometimes look rather dull. It's easy to spot such blogs because of a monochromatic appearance; yet these sites never run out of visitors and most have regular members returning to read new blogs updated by the author. Craig's List also gets incredible amounts of traffic daily despite a simplistic website appearance. This shows that content is much more valuable to searchers than design.

When launching a new website, it's smarter to invest in its content rather than design since that is what search engines value rather than aesthetics. The popular phrase heard everywhere is: 'content is king.' The higher the quality of the written material, the better the search engines will rank it on their listings. Along that same line, the more actual information available at that internet location, the better the chances are of competing with other such internet locations. All of this is a wise strategy for any company just starting to establish its online presence.

The visual aspect of internet design should by no means be completely disregarded; it has evolved to what it is now because of its importance in the larger vision of web development. A perfect balance between content and visual factors should be a constant objective when in internet design to achieve the best website possible!
