How to Make an Adjustable Clothing Rack

104 5
    • 1). Cut the 5/8-inch thick and 3/4-inch wide wood boards using a miter or a skill saw. You will need eight 4-foot long boards to make the vertical stands of the clothing rack and 12 2-foot long boards to make the horizontal rails for the rack.

    • 2). Place the 4-feet long boards on the floor so that the wide side is against the floor. Use a tape measure and a pencil and make small marks on the center of the boards 1 inch, 13 inches and 25 inches from the top of the boards.

    • 3). Use an 1/8-inch drill bit and drill small round holes where you made the pencil marks.

    • 4). Mark the center of each end of the 2-foot long wood boards with a pencil and a tape measure.

    • 5). Use an 1/8-inch drill bit to make the small holes at the ends of the 2-foot boards. These holes are for attaching the 2-foot boards onto the 4-foot long vertical stands with screws.

    • 6). Screw three 2-foot long boards from the ends onto one 4-foot long board using three 1-inch screws and a screwdriver.

    • 7). Attach another 4-foot board to the opposite ends of the three 2-foot boards with three 1-inch screws. The resulting assembly should resemble a ladder.

    • 8). Repeat Steps 6 and 7 with the remaining four 4-foot long boards and nine 2-foot long boards to make a total of four identical “ladder” assemblies.

    • 9). Take two ladder assemblies and attach them together using two or three small self-closing hinges. Take a pencil and mark the hole spots for the hinges to one of the 4-foot long boards of each ladder assembly. Make sure you mark them at the same level to make the assembly level.

Use an 1/8-inch drill bit and drill small holes according to the pencil marks. Screw the hinge into the 4-foot boards with four to six screws per hinge so you can attach two ladder assemblies together on one side. The resulting structure can be opened to a v-shaped formation and will stand freely.

Repeat Steps 9 and 10 to attach third and fourth ladder assembly to the structure. As a result, you have an adjustable and self-standing clothing rack that you can open to a four-part structure.
