- 1). Open Terminal and type "sudo apt-get install --fix-broken". Press "Enter" and authenticate with your password. This will give you information about what you can do to fix Ubuntu. Follow the directions. If you still need to reinstall, then back up your important documents to an external device.
- 2). Insert an Ubuntu installation CD into your computer's optical drive. If you no longer have the installation CD, go to ubuntu.com/download. Download the version of Ubuntu you want and burn the .iso to CD.
- 3). Restart your computer. On some computers, you need to push a key to boot from the CD. Others do not have that requirement. Your computer will boot from the disc and give you the option to install Ubuntu or to try Ubuntu. Click "Try Ubuntu."
- 4). Click on the "Network Connection" icon in the menu bar and connect to your network. This makes the installation process faster.
- 5). Click "Install Ubuntu" on the desktop.
- 6). Check the boxes next to "Download Updates While Installing" and "Install This Third-Party Software." Although this step is not necessary, if you do not check the boxes, you will need to update Ubuntu after installation. Click the "Forward" button.
- 7). Click the button next to "Erase Ubuntu (Your Current Version) and Reinstall." Click "Forward."
- 8). Click "Install Now." During the installation, you need to tell Ubuntu your time zone, preferred keyboard layout and login information. Follow the on-screen instructions. When the installation completes, click "Restart Now."
