- 1). Mow over the area of mondo grass with your lawn mower on its lowest setting. This will eliminate the majority of the leafy outer growth and quicken the smothering process.
- 2). Spray down the area with a garden hose until the soil is moist to the touch.
- 3). Cover the area with 6 to 8 layers of newspaper while the ground is still moist. Press the newspaper firmly to the ground and respray the area to moisten the paper.
- 4). Shovel mulch on top of the newspaper and spread to a thickness of approximately 3 inches. The mondo grass will be completely smothered within 3 to 4 weeks.
