Techniques for Breast Reduction

104 13

    Methods

    • There are several variations of incision patterns when performing a breast reduction. The most popular technique is known as the Pedicle Method. Depending on the size and shape of the breast, variations of this method will be used. These include the inferior, medial or superior pedicles. The reason this procedure is used so often is that it minimizes the risk of losing sensation in the breast and nipple area, since the tissue or pedicle remains connected to the breast at some point. The technique known as the free nipple graft method (FNG) actually severs the connection with the milk ducts and prevents women from being able to breast feed after their surgery.

    Procedure

    • During the procedure, an incision is made around the areola and continues down to the bottom of the breast. This technique is sometimes referred to as the Keyhole or Anchor Method. After the excess fat is removed, the breast is lifted and the nipple is moved in order to match the size of the smaller breast.

    Effects

    • Though breast reduction surgery is relatively minor, complications can arise due to infection, bleeding or adverse reaction to the anesthesia. During recovery, there will likely be a fair amount of pain which can be regulated with prescription medication from your doctor. Additional side effects can include temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the breast and nipple area. If the breasts were extremely large, it may not be possible to keep the areola and nipple intact during the surgery. If removed and repositioned, this increases the chances of losing sensation. Additionally, another permanent side effect will be scarring. Though the scars will heal and fade in time, they will remain visible.

    Benefits

    • Having overly large breasts can impact a woman mentally as well as physically. The benefits of reducing the size of her breasts are numerous. Physically, the strain on a woman's back and neck, as well as her overall posture, will vastly improve once her breasts are smaller. Emotionally, a woman's self-esteem and confidence may be enhanced. Depending upon the specific person, the benefits of breast reduction surgery can outweigh the risks.

    Considerations

    • Obviously, before you have any type of medical procedure, you want to make the right choice in choosing a surgeon. Be sure to do your research, get testimonials from other patients, and talk to several different plastic surgeons before committing to one doctor. Since breast reduction may be considered a medical procedure and not cosmetic surgery, the cost of the surgery may be covered by your health insurance.
