The US Policy For Pakistan

103 10
Pakistan became free on 14 August 47.
It was a tortuous creation with murder and blood shed in the background.
There were mass scale massacres and entire populations migrated from and to Pakistan.
The creation of Pakistan on the two nation theory gave no respite to the Moslems who felt like Jinnah that they had been given a moth eaten state.
Pakistan thus started on a one point plan to counter a larger India.
It started by joining the United States Military pacts.
The US was told that it would be part of the grand American plan to fight Communism.
But in reality it received arms to equip its armed forces against India.
This was the start of the US association with Pakistan and is well nigh almost 6 decades old.
Over the years the United States and successive Presidents treated Pakistan with kid gloves.
Massive aid including Military aid was poured into Pakistan as the USA felt it was a reliable ally.
But over a period of time the geo political situation changed and India emerged the dominant power as well as the better economic prospect.
Pakistan got mired down in religious frenzy and obscurantism.
It started terrorist training camps and over the entire Mullah began to dominate the ethos of Pakistan.
The United States by virtue of its close relationship with Pakistan tried to support moderate leaders like Benazir Bhutto.
But she was murdered and the USA had no choice but to do business with the military leadership.
The war in Afghanistan is now the major factor governing US and Pakistan ties.
The USA expects Pakistan to go all out against the Taliban and Al Qaeda, many of whom have sanctuary in the border areas of Pakistan.
For this purpose millions of dollars of aid and weapons are being pooured into Pakistan.
The USA is now faced with a Hobson's choice, it has realized that Pakistan is a global terror nation, but it cannot bell the cat as it is involved in Afghanistan in a no win situation and needs Pakistan to help it out.
In addition there is the element of fear that that the nuclear arsenal of Pakistan does not fall into the hands of terrorists who consider the United States the great Satan.
What can the USA do in such a situation? The choice is difficult as the USA has got caught in a bind, but the USA will have to realize that to stop terror all over the world the State of Pakistan must be dealt with first.
It is a difficult decision, but perhaps in the years to come this may be the only option available.
