How to Make a Taokaka Mask
- 1). Mold the air-dry modeling lay into an oval face plate. Press and smooth the clay out with your hands until you have a nice oval that fits your face. Allow the face plate to air-dry overnight.
- 2). Prepare to make the paper mache mask. Mix two parts glue and one part water in a small bowl. Place news paper over your workspace. Put the air-dry face plate on top of the news paper.
- 3). Dip strips of paper into the glue mixture and paste them onto the face plate until you have a layer of paper. Let the layer dry for an hour and add a second layer. Repeat this step until you have about five to six layers. Allow the mask dry completely for a few hours or overnight.
- 4). Draw equal size round holes that are large enough for you to see through (about the size of a half dollar) on the mask with the black marker. Carefully, remove the mask from the clay.
- 5). Cut out the round eye holes. Insert the tip of the knife through the mask on the outline of the circle. Cut along the outline and remove the circle. Repeat for the other eye hole.
- 6). Dip your paintbrush in black paint and paint the entire front of the mask, including around the edge of the eye holes. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- 7). Cut the mouth of the mask. On the white felt, draw a mouth similar to the shape of the Chesire cat in "Alice in Wonderland" with the black marker. Draw zigzag lines up and down the mouth to make teeth. Cut out the mouth and glue it to the front of the mask underneath the eye holes. Let the glue dry for a few minutes.
- 8). Add the red eye paper. Draw two round circles slightly bigger that the eye holes on the red translucent paper or plastic. Cut them out. Turn the mask onto the face. Glue one red circle onto the back of each eye hole.
