Types of Travel Bags
- The hustle and bustle of airports is a prime place to see roller suitcases in action. One of the most popular carry-on travel bag options, roller suitcases and duffels have wheels and a permanent or retractable pulling mechanism so that it may be pulled or carried. The roller travel bag usually has a main compartment with one or two pockets for smaller accessories. Though it may cause less strain than carrying a heavy bag, a roller travel bag is not a good option for hikers those traveling over rough terrain.
- Rucksacks, or backpacks, are generally used by hikers or those who plan to do more walking during their travels. These travel bags usually contain two shoulder straps and a few exterior accessory pockets, which can be vulnerable during air travel. Rucksacks are typically top-loading, which makes accessing personal belongings more difficult. They are available in a range of styles and sizes to fit different torsos.
- Sports enthusiasts with lots of athletic gear and individuals that tend to pack heavy sometimes choose a duffel bag for travel. Duffels usually incorporate a larger, boxy design to provide more space and have a single shoulder carrying strap. This bulkier style of bag is not recommended for lengthy travel or walking but rather for short excursions or trips from work to the gym.
- For overnight travel or trips that require less packing, a messenger bag is ideal. Similar to the style of delivery bags used by paperboys, messenger bags have enough room for the bare necessities and not much else. Some styles contain a designated pocket to hold a laptop computer. The bags usually have both interior and exterior pockets like a purse, making them great for toiletries, makeup or other small items.
- Though more expensive than some luggage, designer travel bags are generally better quality, often more durable and provide a bit of added style to the journey. Colorful materials and accents help make some designer travel bags easier to spot in an airport full of similar luggage.
