Does Mulch Attract Bugs?

    Why Bugs Like Mulch

    • Many types of bugs like to eat decaying matter. This makes mulch a prime candidate for finding food for these bugs. In addition to containing bits of wood, mulch contains decayed wood and partially decayed wood. Other bugs like to eat wood. In addition to providing food, mulch keeps the ground moist and soft. This makes it easier for insects such as termites to tunnel through the earth and make pathways from the nest to the food source.

    Types of Bugs

    • Many different types of bugs are attracted to mulch. These bugs include earwigs, centipedes, millipedes and sowbugs. Most of these bugs are harmless to people and plants. Although termites are expected to be the largest insect problem, they do not establish colonies due to the presence of mulch. They do feed on the mulch, and if their colonies happen to be nearby, they may be seen in the mulch.

    Consequences

    • Bugs like earwigs tend to damage flowering ornamental plants by feeding on the plants. If this occurs, keep the mulch away from the plants that are getting damaged. Use an inorganic mulch or one that is not made of wood. If the mulch is placed up against the foundation of the home or too close to entryways, insects who feed on the mulch can migrate inside. Also, since termite treatments are often placed at the foundation, it is unwise to cover the treated area with mulch.

    Prevention

    • The best way to prevent excessive insect pests in and around your home is to properly apply the mulch in your landscape. Make sure the mulch is not too deep. Shredded wood mulches should be between 2 and 3 inches deep. Keep the mulch between 6 and 12 inches away from the foundation of your home and from entryways. If many termites are present in the mulch, call a professional exterminator to treat the areas near the foundation.
