How to Melt Homemade Pewter

104 3
    • 1). Place the pewter you wish to melt in a cast iron bowl with a pour spout. The cast iron will not melt along with the pewter, as iron has a much higher melting point. Steel works well, also. Copper and aluminum may melt and cause disastrous leakage.

    • 2). Stack pewter pieces in a small pyramid in the bottom of your container. If the pewter is in a single block, simply center it in the container.

    • 3). Choose a handheld torch that heats to no more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit, but no less than 460 degrees. These little torches look like small flashlights with a right angle at the top. They're available at hardware stores.

    • 4). Put on protective leather gloves and eyewear. Choose tinted eyewear when using torches; a slight grey or yellow tint should work well.

    • 5). Light the torch and hold the flame to the top of the pewter. Move the torch in circular motions, watching the pewter heat to red hot. When it gets hot enough, the pewter should collapse all at once.
