Use Oriental Rugs as Wall Art

    • 1). Hang your oriental rugs on the wall. To do so correctly, first determine which way the pile lays by stroking it with your hand. When the rug is hanging, the direction of the pile should point down so that the light reflects well on it, but more importantly so that you attach the rug to the wall along the warp edge, which creates the least stress on the rug.

    • 2). Cut your strip of wood lath and the Velcro so that it is the same width as the top of the rug when it is hanging.

    • 3). Use a staple gun to attach the hooked side of the Velcro to the wood lath. Staple it along both edges of the length.

    • 4). Measure the carpet and the height of the wall to decide exactly where on the wall to mount the wood strip, and mount the wood strip with wall anchors. Check that the strip is level first.

    • 5). Measure and cut a three-inch wide strip of unbleached muslin half an inch longer than the Velcro strip. Fold over 1/4 inch along the length on each edge, and press into place. Run a straight stitch along each edge to hold it.

    • 6). Center and stitch the fuzzy side of the Velcro strip to the finished side down the middle of the hemmed muslin strip, fuzzy side out. Trim the muslin ends to align with the Velcro.

    • 7). Hand stitch the muslin strip with the Velcro to the rug (hem side down, Velcro side up) using carpet thread that matches the carpet.

    • 8). Mount the rug to the wall. Make adjustments in the way it hangs by adjusting the way the two Velcro pieces attach. It may not be perfect because you are working with a hand-crafted object that may not be perfectly square.

Display Oriental Rugs on the Floor and on Furniture

    • 1). Display your oriental rugs on the floor. Real oriental rugs are meant to be used and their value may increase with wear. Collectors love and seek out worn rugs. Keep it vacuumed. You can also take it outside and beat it to get rid of embedded dirt. Professional cleaning may be a good idea, but only infrequently.

    • 2). Drape an oriental rug over a large piece of furniture, such as the back of a couch or a piano or drape one over a hall banister.

    • 3). Keep oriental rugs out of direct sunlight.
