Attributes of the Best RPG Games

103 1
What makes a great RPG? What are the common attributes between the best RPG games out there? In general, it shouldn't matter too much whether the RPG is a PC role-playing game, a console-based role-playing game, or a pen and paper role-playing game.
All three of these different genres share many of the same elements regardless of the game platform.
Three important attributes that should be a focus for the best RPG games are advancement, variety, and pay-off.
Advancement is a pivotal component of a great RPG.
Sometimes this advancement can be seen in a mechanical or statistical form.
Players can advance their characters to become more powerful.
They are able to do things that they were previously not able to do in the beginning.
Advancement can also come in a storytelling form.
The player is able to continue the storyline from one point to the next and take pride in this fact.
Variety is also a very important aspect in creating a spectacular RPG.
One of the most important aspects of a game is introducing enough variety to keep the player interested.
This is especially important with RPGs due to the fact that they are very much based on storytelling.
A story told without enough variety in it gets dull and boring very quickly.
It becomes predictable and players quickly move on to something more stimulating and interesting.
Pay-off is a final, and key, element in all games, especially role-playing games.
This component is very important in any game.
The player must have some sort of pay-off or reward for playing a game ten, twenty, or even over a hundred or more hours.
They have to feel like there is a reason they stuck through the game.
Maybe it is to say that they were one of the few players that were able to beat the game? Or, maybe it is because completing certain parts of the game were enjoyable to them.
Either way, there has to be some sort of pay-off for the player.
And, this pay-off may be different for one player over another.
Overall, these three characteristics can overlap when creating the best RPG game.
In general, it doesn't matter what type of game it is.
It could be a PC game, a console game, a pen and paper game, or even some other type of role-playing game.
Each RPG will focus on advancement, variety, and pay-off in some way.
The key to creating the best RPG games ever are really focusing on these three elements and providing them for their players.
