Cab driver has licence taken away

When an individual is accused of motoring offences, it can have a serious impact on their professional lives.

An example of such a case involved cab driver Stephen Allen, who has had his licence removed after a series of spending violations.

The 47-year-old racked up 14 points on his licence as a result of a number of traffic offences. Individuals are automatically disqualified from using the roads once they have 12.

Initially, due to pleas of exceptional hardship, a court in Ipswich ruled Mr Allen should be allowed to keep his normal licence despite the motoring offences so he could continue to earn a living and make his mortgage repayments.

However, in a new development, magistrates dismissed his appeal against Norwich City Council's decision not to renew his taxi driving licence.

According to the driver, the last of the seven speeding incidents had been an "obvious mistake", the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reports.

He added that, in the case of all the other traffic offences, he had been "flippant".

Mr Allen stated: "I was pushing my luck, yes that's it - pushing the boundaries. But this particular one was just a mistake."

He admitted that he had driven at 45mph in the 30mph limits on a number of roads in the Norfolk county town of Norwich and said he once sped on Koblenz Avenue because he felt threatened by his customers.

Mr Allen remarked: "I had two passengers in my car who were obviously drug addicts - you never know who you are going to pick up - and I found it quite threatening.

"There's no way it excuses my behaviour, but I wanted to get the job over and done with. I thought I would speed to get rid of them, in all honesty. But I'm trying my best to be a better driver."
