The Mid-West state of Ohio played an important part in the Civil War, and two Civil War battles were fought in the state. Many officers and troops who fought for the Union army called Ohio home. Throughout the state, famous and not-so-well known soldiers are honored with monuments. - The Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Cleveland, Ohio commemorates the American Civil War and the Cuyahoga County veterans who gave their lives. The monument's main focus is the 125-foot black Quicy granite column topped with a Goddess of Freedom statue. Each side offers a battle scenes depicted in bronze. The four scenes portray the Navy, Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry. Around this column stretch six bands of bronze engraved with the names of 30 battles where Cuyahoga County veterans fought. The recently rehabilitated Memorial Room sits inside the monument's base and contains bronze relief and bust sculptures. Walk here from the Cleveland Mall or Public Library, as well as the Hyatt Regency and Terminal Tower.

soldiersandsailors.com - A bronze memorial statue of George Armstrong Custer stands at his birthplace in Hopedale, Ohio. Read about his life, including the story of his "Last Stand," which made him famous beyond his years, in the exhibit pavilion. A famous cavalry man in the Civil War, he was born in 1839. The monument is open during daylight hours all year long, and the admission is free. Although the monument meets ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements, it remains only partially accessible to handicapped visitors. The Center Unity Cemetery is within walking distance.

ohsweb.ohiohistory.org - Erected on August 23, 1878, the Colonel Robert L. McCook Monument stands in Washington Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, he commanded the 9th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. He became mortally wounded in battle on August 6, 1862 and died one day later. Leopold Fettweiss sculpted the marble bust that sits atop a 16-foot high granite base. Admission is free.
