    • 1). Decide what kind of immigration status you will seek. You can immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker or professional, a student or as a business immigrant. If you want to immigrate as a skilled worker, you have to already have secured a job in Canada and work in a trade that is listed as approved in Canada’s National Occupation Classification. If you want to immigrate as a student (Canada’s Experience Class) you must have gone to and graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution, as well as have a year of full-time and skilled work experience in Canada. This option is usually for individuals who have entered Canada on a student visa and want to transition that visa into a permanent residency. The final way you can immigrate to Canada is as a business immigrant. The types of business immigrants, which carry different requirements for investment money you must bring with you to Canada, can be found on the Citizen and Immigration Canada Department website under "Investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons" (see Resources). In most cases, you must have a net worth of at least C$300,000 and plan to invest up to C$800,000 into a Canadian business venture.

    • 2). Save money. Regardless of the type of status that you seek, you will have to have enough money to fully support yourself when you are in Canada. This generally means that you could support yourself, without a job, for up to one year. The exact amount that you need will vary depending on the year and immigration type so verify the amount with the High Commission of Canada in Kingston, Jamaica, before you leave Jamaica.

    • 3). Take an English and French language test before submitting your application. The test is administered by the British Council at 28 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 10, Jamaica. You can contact the testing center at 876-920-5226.

    • 4). Go to the High Commission of Canada in Kingston to fill out your application for immigration. You can contact the office 24 hours a day for more information. The automated telephone number is 876-511-3393.

    • 5). Wait for your application to be approved and your visa to be issued before you leave Jamaica and enter Canada.
