Part 3 Typical Mistakes Made by Chicken Koop Builders

In my first two articles about errors building a Chicken koop I pointed out these common mistakes.

• Not writing a detailed plan
• Not gathering the right materials
• Not choosing the proper place for the coop
• Not planning the operation and functionalities
• Not giving the chickens proper ventilation
• Not insulating the walls
• Not putting the water and the feeders in the correct place
• Not having the correct light source

In this article I am listing a new set of mainly errors that you should avoid to get the right chicken koop according to your needs.

• Not Protecting Your Chickens From Predators

May be your zone is a safe zone talking about predators like foxes, coyotes, raccoons, but surely there are dogs and cats that sometimes attack chickens. It is important to plan good safety measures to protect your chicken koop.

Here are the basics to protect your chickens from predators:

1. Try to build the coop away from brush where other animals may live.
2. Bury your outside chicken runs with chicken wire. You can lay the wire on the ground and then cover it. This will keep predators such as raccoons, cats and even dogs from digging underneath the run.

• Not Protecting Your Chickens From The Elements

As your home protects you from inclement weather a well constructed chicken koop must protect your chickens too. Think about that the coop must be a safe place, much like your house is for you.

Keeping safe your chicken house from the elements, should meet these requirements.

1 - If you can build the chicken koop on an elevated area where it can be drained easily and therefore with the least amount of dampness in the coop.

2 - The doors and the windows should be assured properly to prevent entry of predators and to ensure that the chickens do not come out when they should not.

3 - A good suggestion is to build the chicken house facing east, I mean facing the sun. This will keep it warm in winter and dry in rainy season.

• Not Being Patient

Like anything else, building a chicken coop can be a challenge. Do not become frustrated or impatient. You have planned correctly, sketched a design, gathered the right materials and chosen a perfect spot to build your chicken coop. It will take time to build the coop and you may run into little issues along the way.
