Data Loss from Dynamic Disks in Windows 2003

101 14
It is necessary to assign a name to a drive after creating partitions in windows hard drive. There are two varying types of drives which Microsoft Windows 2003 supports ie; Dynamic and Basic. The dynamic ones include simple, spanned and mirrored volumes. Dynamic disks are considered more reliable and safer than basic disks, but at some point they may also fail and cause data loss. And this is the time, you need to opt for Windows Data Recovery solutions to get your data back.

Dynamic Windows disks are more beneficial than the basic disks. The basic disks use original MS-DOS-style MBR (Master Boot Record) partition tables for storing primary and logical partition information. Dynamic drives use private region of hard drive to maintain an LDM (Logical Disk Manager) database. Here the LDM database is replicated, so that every dynamic disk knows about other disk configuration. It makes dynamic disks more stable and recoverable than ordinary Windows disks.

Before you go for the dynamic disks, consider below suggested best practice and the limitations of using dynamic drives:

Before converting your hard drive from basic to dynamic, you need to determine whether you need features offered by the dynamic disk. If you don't need spanned volumes, mirrored volumes or stripped volumes, it would be best to use basic disks.

If you want to use the dynamic disk and you've both locally attached storage and SAN storage, consider below recommendations, according to your situation:

  • Use basic disks on SAN storage and configure locally and configure local storage as basic disk.

  • Use dynamic disk on only SAN storage disks and keep local storage as basic.

Microsoft Windows doesn't support mounting of hard drive volume to multiple hosts simultaneously. If you force the mounting process, you might come across disk corruption that cause if the changes are made to volume on both hosts. Windows data loss and require Windows Recovery to be sorted out.

Windows Data Recovery is best possible using third party applications. The software are known as Windows Data Recovery Software. They use high-end scanning techniques to thoroughly scan the affected hard drive and retrieve all of the lost data from it. The tools have interactive and simple graphical user interface and thus let you carry out quick and easy recovery.
