- 1). Determine if you or your spouse or children qualify for an expedited naturalization process. Aliens who are married to a U.S. citizen, children of a U.S. citizen or have served in the United States military with honorable service for three years are all exempted from the residency requirement and may apply for an expedited naturalization process.
- 2). Download and complete your N-400 Application for Naturalization. This application is available at United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) offices and can be downloaded from their website (see Resources). - 4). Study for your English proficiency and citizenship exam while waiting for your oath appointment date. If you're prepared to take your test immediately after your application processing and background check have been completed, you can gain your citizenship faster.
- 5). Wait 120 days. Federal law requires applicants for expedited naturalization to be assigned an oath appointment date within 120 days, though many times this does not happen. After that time has passed, consult your attorney and have her file a Petition for Hearing on Naturalization Application. This petition is basically a lawsuit against the USCIS that forces them to immediately process your naturalization request or face further legal action. Generally, USCIS responds quickly to these petitioned applications and the lawsuit is dropped, allowing you to get your expedited naturalization quickly.
